Cibreo, Firenze

Filed under: Uncategorized — mblog @ 12:37 am

I got the chance of spending a day in Firenze before a Caselex advisory board meeting. Although I find Firenze a bit too crowded with tourists, I always return when I have the chance. This is primarily because I lived there for two years in the early nineties when I doing post-grauduate studies at the European University Institutes in the hills of Fiesole, just outside Firenze.

One of my preferred places to eat in Firenze is Cibreo located almost at Piazza San Ambrogio close to Via dei Pilastri where my apartment was.

Wi-Fi Liabilities

Wi-Fi Liabilities: “

Interesting law review article:

Suppose you turn on your laptop while sitting at the kitchen table at home and respond OK to a prompt about accessing a nearby wireless Internet access point owned and operated by a neighbor. What potential liability may ensue from accessing someone else’s wireless access point? How about intercepting wireless connection signals? What about setting up an open or unsecured wireless access point in your house or business? Attorneys can expect to grapple with these issues and other related questions as the popularity of wireless technology continues to increase.

This paper explores several theories of liability involving both the accessing and operating of wireless Internet, including the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, wiretap laws, as well as trespass to chattels and other areas of common law. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of key policy considerations.

Big opportunity: SOA Networks

I am spending some time with among others Henrik Hvid Jensen to come up with a business plan on a startup company to deliver SOA services.

The keynote today at OSBC 2005 by Irving Wladawsky-Berger of IBM reaffirmed that services within SOA in the near future are going to be increasingly demanded by every large firm with complex IT systems.

Another powertalk from Lessig

Lawrence Lessig gave yet another powerful speech today at OSBC 2005 on the war against innovation and presented the three fronts: (1) the copyright cartel’s attempt to criminalize technology as it manifests in the Grokster case, (2) the incumbent telcos attempt to starve off competition in the broadband market by lobbying for bans on muni-wireless experiments, and (3) Microsoft collecting a war chest of software patents to fight the competition from open source software.

Eating sushi in last year’s sushi bar

Filed under: Miscellanous, OSBC 2005 — mhg @ 8:55 am

Funny, last year at OSBC 2004 I enjoyed a sushi meal at exact the same place as this time despite the fact that it seems in Union Square area of San Francisco there are more sushi restaurants than Italian pizzerias.

Scott Mace

Last year at OSBC 2004 I was attending one of the conference tracks on legal issues and open source software. This year at OSBC 2005 I am doing the same and I find myself sitting in the same place in the same conference room and in front of me exactly in the same place as last year is Scott Mace.
