OSBC-UK panel on IPR

Filed under: Events, Open source — mhg @ 4:59 pm

IMHO, the best and most focused presentation at this inaugural version of the Open Source Business Conference Europe was the panel Risk that proprietary software vendors face in using open source with Larry Robins and Jason Wacha.

Among the key points:

Open source is viral, closed source is terminal

There has not been any relevant lawsuit - including SCO - regarding GPL in 15 years

Want to avoid litigation? Get out of proprietary software!

Also an interesting - and heated - discussion between Jason Wacha and the strong team of Microsoft lawyers in the audience. In his presentation Jason Wacha questioned Microsoft’s motives with respect to software patents. He implied that Microsoft might by using patents to defend themselves from competition from in particular Linux. This was - expectedly - heavily contested by the Microsoft people present.

On another note, it is interesting how Microsoft has a massive presence at all conferences where open source is discussed.

Forbes CEO Forum

Filed under: Events — mhg @ 4:01 pm

I am spending 2 days at Forbes CEO Forum in Copenhagen courtesy of Morten Lund. I am not sure what to make of this event. It does not seem that any of the speakers are saying anything that I haven’t heard or that I couldn’t read or hear somewhere else. Maybe, the prime reason for being here is the networking opportunities, if you are trying to get close to CEOs of large companies.

Er Danmark et Microsoft-protektorat, Fogh? (in Danish)

Filed under: Internet policy — mhg @ 2:16 pm

Caselex meeting in Vilnius

Filed under: Uncategorized — mhg @ 12:04 pm

I am spending this Friday in Vilnius working as part of the advisory board of Caselex with a group of good people to try to figure how best to collect, aggregate, add value to and bring to market on a European level a lot of information about national court decisions in 25 different languages. Challenging indeed. But a good example of how a European services would really be able to add value.

Danish hackers launch Free Beer 3.0, with guarana

Filed under: Internet policy — mhg @ 9:32 pm

Danish hackers launch Free Beer 3.0, with guarana: “Cory Doctorow:
The Danish free culture activists who created a free beer with an open-source recipe have released a new version of their free beer: Free Beer 3.0 with guarana.

Free Beer 3.0 has a new recipe, a new label, and a new Flickr Pool

Master brewer Birthe Skands describes 3.0 as a ‘traditional, top fermented beer with a very high drinkability factor - defined as the desire to drink another glass or bottle. With heavier beer from Belgium, for example, you’ll drink only one glass which you’ll indulge in. With FREE BEER you’ll want to drink another one - so it’s actually thirst quenching. We also wanted a nice color, and ended up with a beautiful, light amber’
