I am quoted in an article by Federico Biancuzzi in SecurityFocus on disclosure of security breaches:

Full disclosure has a long tradition in the security community worldwide, yet different European countries have different views on the legality of vulnerability research. SecurityFocus contributor Federico Biancuzzi investigates the subject of full disclosure and the law by interviewing lawyers from twelve EU countries: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania, and the UK.

Skt. Petri: The second best school in Denmark

Filed under: Resources — mhg @ 12:47 am

Vilhelm - my son at 8 years - attends the Danish-German private school Sankt Petri, which is located very close to where we live.

In the latest review of the quality of Danish schools, CEPOS - an independent Danish think tank dedicated to preserving and strengthening the foundations of a free and prosperous society - rated the school as the second best school in all of Denmark.

Interestingly, CEPOS’ rating of schools is not only based on the grades achieved by the pupils. If that was the case, Sankt Petri would have come out a clear winner for the second year in a row. The rating is based on something that CEPOS calls the teaching effect. This effect aims to show how pupils at a school are doing taking into account not only academic grades but also the social background of their parents.

A race to the bottom? Copyright protection for 95 years!

Filed under: Internet policy, Music, New media — mhg @ 10:01 pm

When will this end? EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy 14 February 2008 announced his intention to propose to the College of the EU Commission that the term of copyright protection for European performers be increased from 50 to 95 years.

“Performing artists - no longer be the ‘poor cousins’ of the music business” – Charlie McCreevy

UPDTATED: Kristian Beyer at Innovationpartners explains why Charlie McCreevy’s proposal is really bad!

More on Gates’ “Creative Capitalism”

Filed under: Lectures and speeches, Resources — mhg @ 1:12 am

About 3 weeks ago I commented on the speech by Bill Gates of Microsoft at Davos this year. Gates spoke about how to alleviate poverty and solve the social problems of the world by creative capitalism as practised by corporations and their manager.

I was not impressed. It seems that the Judge Richard Posner is also a creative capitalism sceptic. Although of course a much more intelligent and well formulating sceptic.

The Rest is Noise

Filed under: Music, New media, Open content — mhg @ 8:40 pm

I reading - actually listening to - a marvellous book The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the 20th Century by Alex Ross. At Alex Ross’ great blog is a link to an iTunes playlist compiled by him to accompany the book. I followed the link to iTunes and was eager and end extremely ready to pay about twenty dollars to download 20 tracks of classical music only to discover that from a non-American iTunes account I’m not allowed to do so.

Come on, Apple, records labels and other rights owner! This is 2008. There are millions of customers willing to pay for your stuff. Don’t keep forcing us all into illegal downloading.
