From World Council of Churches Release “Love to Share”:

The World Council of Churches (WCC), an international Christian ecumenical organization, recently released a free PDF, Love To Share, that explores the role Christianity and the church play in relation to intellectual property. Love To Share is released under a CC BY-NC-ND license and contains some incredibly well-written text that explains our licenses and how they intersect with the goals of the WCC.

Free, Free lunch and free beer

Filed under: New media, Open content, Weblogs — mhg @ 10:59 am

Free

The podcast with Chris Anderson on Free - which is part of the really excellent Econtalk podcast series - might not give you a lot of answers but serves brilliantly to highlight the concept of Free - as was the focus of this year’s Reboot 10 - and its cousins Free lunches and Free beer. Highly recommended!

Videolectures.net

Filed under: Creative commons, Events, Open content, Resources — mhg @ 4:29 pm

Check out Videolectures.net. It has a wealth of videos with speeches, lectures and presentation on lots of interesting topics. Refreshingly, there is a lot of European stuff and the service is thus not so america-centric as most similar services. And all content is released under a creative commons licens.

This new show which was inaugurated following the Supernova2008 conference is worth watching, if you want to follow the developments within the “not only open-in but also open-out” social web discussions.

Here’s a very informative video that seeks to explain what ccLearn is all about

ccLearn is a division of Creative Commons which is dedicated to realizing the full potential of the Internet to support open learning and open educational resources (OER). Our mission is to minimize barriers to sharing and reuse of educational materials — legal barriers, technical barriers, and social barriers.

The Tragedy of the Anticommons

Filed under: Open content, Open source, Resources — mhg @ 10:50 am

I have start reading Janet Hope’s book Biobazaar that basically asks if the open source approach can do for biotechnology what it has done for information technology. So far it is an excellent read!

The book has introduced me to the idea of the Tragedy of the Anticommons as opposed to the more traditional theory of the Tragedy of the Commons.

I am looking forward to thinking about during the next couple of weeks to what extent the theory of the anticommons is plausible and if so whether it can be applied the information technology setting. And as usual there is already a lot of good stuff available on the topic freely accesible at the net (e.g. The Anticommons Problem, theory and practice).
