IP Colloquium

Filed under: IT and computer law, Lectures and speeches, Resources, Weblogs — mhg @ 6:24 pm

This - IP Colloquium - looks to be a podcast worthwhile subscribing to, even some of the episode may seem to be a little too much centered on Americal law to be interesting for me.

Free, Free lunch and free beer

Filed under: New media, Open content, Weblogs — mhg @ 10:59 am

Free

The podcast with Chris Anderson on Free - which is part of the really excellent Econtalk podcast series - might not give you a lot of answers but serves brilliantly to highlight the concept of Free - as was the focus of this year’s Reboot 10 - and its cousins Free lunches and Free beer. Highly recommended!

Book review: “Ringmar takes self-righteousness to extremes”

Filed under: Books, Weblogs — mhg @ 3:33 pm

A not so positive review of Erik Ringmar’s A Blogger’s Manifesto by Christopher Howse: A Blogger’s Manifesto: By so many, to so few in the Spectator.

First I must say parenthetically, for those who take no cognisance of such things, that blogs are no more than diaries that people post up on their own websites, hoping that some desperate wanderer or other in cyberspace might like to read them.

Hmmn, Christopher Howse semms to have a very simplistic view of blogs.

The world had 70 million bloggers last April, and the number may have doubled since then. Britain now has four million bloggers. Most blogs are read by fewer than 10 people a day. Only 10 per cent have more than 100 hits a day. You’d reach a wider audience if you photocopied a few sheets of paper and left them on the Underground.

Okay, then. 4 million blogs multiplied by 10 people a day gives 40 millions readings a day of just British blogs. That is lot. The Lobdon tube would become very messy, if 40 millions let alone 4 millions photocopies were to be left there for people to pick up and read every day.

The fight between “Free” and “Open”

Filed under: Open source, Weblogs — mhg @ 11:46 am

Here is a very illuminating discussion between Tim O’Reilly and Eben Moglen about web 2.0 really showing us the fanatical, ideoligical zeal of the the Free Software movement and the pragmatic, business-oriented Open source movement. This “infighting” might not be very nice to watch - however entertaining - but is nevertheless extremely important to keep both movements vibrant, adaptive and sustainable.

OpenLife has changed from Movable Type to Wordpress. The URLs are still http://suse.groenbaek.net/openlife and http://www.groenbaek.net.

Many kudos to Guan Yang for helping with the setting up and transition to Wordpress and to Joachim Oschlag for Wordpress design and theme implementation.

Webnote Happy 1.0

Filed under: Weblogs — mhg @ 11:24 am

I have just begun to use Webnote Happy 1.0 as my preferred bookmark manager. Maybe it will do the trick. Maybe not. In any event, all my data on bookmarks including tags and comments are saved on del.icio.us and exportable to HTLM. So if another and better (for me) manager sees the light of day to switch for me should be easy and seamless. Hooray for open standards!
